PRK is a procedure involving the removal of the surface layer of the cornea (epithelium) by gentle scraping and use of a computer-controlled excimer laser to reshape the stroma. PRK is an outpatient corneal surgery that is designed to reduce or correct mild to moderate myopia. This is done by use of a laser that precisely reshapes the cornea. The objective of PRK is to reduce or eliminate your dependency on glasses or contact lenses.
PRK is an overwhelmingly successful eye surgery procedure. Most of the people who have had PRK report they no longer need to wear glasses or contacts. In a large clinical trial, two-thirds of the patients who had PRK can see 20/20 or better without corrective lenses. 95% can see at least 20/40, well enough to pass a driver's test.
